10/3/2011
COLUMBUS, Ga. Professor Nikita Harris gave the keynote address at the Youth & College Division Leadership Awards luncheon on October 1 at the 69th Annual NAACP Georgia State Convention held at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in Atlanta, Georgia. The awards luncheon recognized outstanding youth groups and college chapters from across the state of Georgia in the areas of leadership and service.  The Youth & College Division was formed over 75 years ago during the NAACP's St. Louis Convention after a passionate and determined youth delegate, Juanita E. Jackson, challenged the leadership of the Association to create a department that focused on the growing concerns of Black youth in America. Through Jackson’s leadership, the National Board of Directors passed a resolution creating the NAACP’s Youth & College Division in March of 1936. This year’s convention held workshops to educate over 300 youth across Georgia on issues related to Education, Health, Juvenile Justice, Economic Empowerment, Political Action and Mentorship.

“Dr. Harris’ speech was very inspirational. She asked the audience filled with student leaders across Georgia, if they were the one? She was referring to the question that Oprah Winfrey asked President Obama during his 2008 presidential campaign. Dr. Harris emphasized the importance of young people being prepared for 21st leadership by knowing their calling and using their God given talents to serve others,” said Linda Iruka, NAACP’s First Vice President of the Youth & College Division for the State of Georgia. Dr. Harris gave credit to the NAACP for helping to develop her talents in public speaking as a young girl growing up in North Texas. “In high school, I competed in the NAACP’s National ACT-SO competitions in New York in 1986 and Washington DC in 1987 in oratory and dramatic arts. Those experiences taught me at an early age that I could be a national competitor at any level,” stated Harris.

Dr. Harris is currently an independent consultant and serves as an adjunct professor at Auburn University in the Department of Communication & Journalism. She is married to Vincent McNeill, President of the local Columbus graduate chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated.
