Five inactive members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, solicited the interest and cooperation of twenty- two other members of inactive status in forming a second graduate chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. in Columbus, Georgia. The Interest Group known as the Ladies of Pink and Green re-activated as General Members. Banning together these ladies began planning and performing numerous service projects. The South Atlantic Regional Director, Mrs. Frederica S. Wilson visited the Interest Group and accepted the group’s choice of Ms. Mary V. Ford of Gamma Tau Omega Chapter as their Mentor.
Their humanitarian thrust provided monthly service and support to the House of Mercy, a shelter for the homeless. Other service projects included a Halloween party for the children from the Battered Women’s Shelter, clothing for the Rape Crisis Center, Easter Baskets to the Nursing Home, Thanksgiving Basket for an adopted family, Christmas favors for the Nursing Home and clean-up of the Battered Women Shelter.
